Live interview with Dr. Kerry Howells.

Resentment and gratitude: The emotional landscape of academia

Join us for an insightful conversation about the emotional realities of academic life. Academic relationships — between supervisors and PhD students, colleagues, or mentors — are often complex and ambiguous. As a coach, I hear many stories about challenging academic relationships, often giving rise to emotions like frustration, disappointment, and even resentment. Such tensions often become great energy drains and potentially damaging to our own well-being at work, while some stay as traumatic experiences long after the relationships has ended.

In this live interview, Dr. Kerry Howells, author of Untangling You: How Can I Be Grateful When I Feel So Resentful?, will explore how resentment arises in academic relationships and how gratitude (even when gratitude feels most unlikely) can offer a way to move toward connections and understanding for others and yourself.

Hosted by me, Sanne Frandsen, coach for women in academia, this conversation invites reflection on the emotional undercurrents of supervision and mentorship in scholarly life. Whether you’re a PhD student, a supervisor, or simply someone navigating the emotional landscape of academia, you’re warmly invited to listen in - and even ask your own question. â€‹â€‹â€‹
